Texas has the best Athletic Director

Texas athletic director DeLoss Dodds took home the award for Athletic Director of the Year on Wednesday night at the fourth annual Sports Business Awards, presented by the Sports Business Journal and SportsBusiness Daily.

And when you look at the stats below, he obviously deserves it.

Texas' total revenue during the 2009 season was $93 million, $25 million more than the next highest in college football, Ohio State. It's $35 million more than the most in the Big 12.

Of that $93 million, Texas made $68 million in profit, $30 million more than its closest competitor in the Big 12, Oklahoma.

That number is only going to grow after Dodds secured $300 million more over 20 years for the athletic department from ESPN in partnership for the Longhorn Network. That's $15 million more per year for the program.

Additionally, Texas' athletic budget has grown to $137 million from $4.2 million when Dodds took over as athletic director two decades ago.

Barnes receives 200,000 raise

Longhorns men’s basketball coach Rick Barnes received a $200,000 raise on Wednesday, bringing his overall yearly salary to $2.4 million, which keeps him among the nation’s 10 highest-paid men’s coaches.

I would say Barnes definitely deserves the raise considering all the success he has had. And after what we saw happen to Texas A&M with Mark Turgeon who darted to Maryland, I think it is smart what the Athletic Directors have done with making sure Barnes stays with his Texas family for quite some time.

Texas >>>> A&M

Just watch the video. It speaks for itself.

Longhorns will always be better than Aggies

Taylor Junggman for Dick Howser Trophy

Every year, college baseball gives out the Dick Howser Trophy to the nation's best player. I belive the best player in the nation is Texas Longhorns pitcher Taylor Junggman and when you check out his stats below I think you would agree with me

• Jungmann has 11 wins on the season (the most in the country).
• Texas is 12-0 on Fridays this year, with Jungmann's lone no-decision coming on a day when he pitched a full nine innings (the 1-0 15-inning slugfest win over Okie State).
• His 0.92 ERA is tops among college starters. Jungmann is the only starter in the country with an ERA under 1.00.
• His three complete game shutouts is tied for tops in the country.
• His opponent batting average is .160, tied for second in the country.
• His hits-per-game is third in the country.
• The nation's second best starter this year, Virginia's Danny Hultzen, is 9-1 with a 1.19 ERA. Moreover, Hultzen on average has received 9.7 runs of support from the Cavaliers offense. Jungmann, by comparison has gotten a measly 5.4 runs per start.

Let’s hope our very own Longhorn Taylor Junggman gets the award! Hook’em Horns!

Ugly situation burring up

By situation we are not talking about the ugly situation at the Jersey Shore, but rather the situation involving the Governor of Texas, Rick Perry and University of Texas President William Powers as well as the University of Texas Chancellor Francisco Cigarroa.

News outlets like The Houston Chronicle are reporting that Mr. Perry may be maneuvering to oust Powers and Cigarroa as retaliation for their resistance to higher education reforms backed by Perry and advocated for by some of his biggest donors.

It always stinks when politics gets involved with sports and lets hope this doesn’t turn out as ugly as when the federal government got involved with baseball.

Texas Longhorns Ranked No. 20 in Post-Spring Poll

ESPN's college football panelists released their post-spring Top 25 poll, with Oklahoma still at No. 1, followed by Alabama, Oregon, LSU, and Boise State.  The Texas Longhorns checked in at #20.  Mack Brown had a down year last year in which they did not qualify for a bowl game.  His work will be cut out for him this season as they try to redeem themselves.

Cory Joseph and Jordan Hamilton Join NBA Draft

Underclassmen Cory Joseph and Jordan Hamilton have joined fellow Texas Longhorn Tristan Thompson and have entered their names in the 2011 NBA Draft.  Losing the three players really hurts the Longhorns and this is a tough blow to handle.  It was expected that at least two of the three players would stay.  Unfortunately, all three have left and have until May 8th to withdraw if they did not hire an agent.  If they stay in the draft, good luck and represent the Longhorns proudly.
