Longhorn football recruits arrive on campus

Such a pretty campus... and home to the new players, now!

Over the long weekend, 22 young men arrived at the University of Texas as the 2012 new recruits. Now, there are 28 new freshmen ready to spend their summer getting ready for the 2012 football season. I can't even imagine going off to college this early to prepare for football, so good luck over the summer! I'm psyched for another season this fall, but I'm not sure I would have given up a summer for it :) Of course, the extra practice means the team next year should be extra amazing... right? I hope so!

Bennie Wylie named Master Strength and Conditioning Coach

Bennie Wylie coaches a Longhorn. He was awarded the title of Master Strength and Conditioning Coach last night.

I always thought the Longhorns football team must have a great coaching team to do as well as they do - now we know for sure. The Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches association has given Strength and Conditioning Head Coach Bennie Wylie the highest honor.

Last night, in Orlando, Florida, Wylie received the title Master Strength and Conditioning Coach (and the matching jacket). Wylie is the third coach to win this honor, Jeff Madden and Donnie Maib have previously received the award.

Longhorns Football Hype

The saying goes Everything is Bigger in Texas, and it could not hold more true for hype around Texas Longhorns football and Longhorns Football.

The Texas Longhorns Football team is one of the most competitive teams in the NCAA Division-I Big 12 Conference. The Longhorns Football program dates back to 1893 and since its start it has been a powerhouse for college football.

The Texas Longhorns Football Roster has had 50 consensus All-American players and 2 Heisman Trophy winners. As a team the Texas Longhorns have won 4 National Championship Titles and 32 Conference Championship Titles. The University of Texas at Austin is the home of the Texas Longhorns football team, the Darrell K.

Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium is where all of the Texas Longhorns games take place. With a capacity of 100,119, DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium is currently the 7th largest non-racing stadium in the world and the 4th largest on-campus stadium in the United States.

Texas Longhorns Spring Game

Despite the absence of Quandre Diggs, the secondary did a solid job throughout the afternoon of the Longhorns spring game. There was a nice end-zone interception by Leroy Scott as well as a 99-yard kickoff return by Mykkele Thompson. Thompson will likely play a larger role in the secondary this season.

Defense end Alex Okafor impressed fans and coaches. He showed speed-rush ability that will likely move him towards the top of the more intimidating defensive ends in the Big 12.

The Texas Longhorns football spring game had plenty of notable performances on the offensive side of the ball. However, it seems as though the highlights for the defensive-side and special teams could be summarized in a few short paragraphs. On the bright side, there weren't any standout weaknesses either...

We Could Lose Longhorns Aggies Game

Aggies fans and Longhorns fans alike worry that a big part of the Texas' football tradition could be disappearing.

What once used to cause brawls just at the shake of a hand before the game even started, might cease to exist as the tradition-laden rivalry is on the chopping block as it appears the Aggies are headed to the SEC while Texas remains in the Big 12.

Both teams agree that they want the rivalry game to remain, but logistics may come up with a different result.

Longhorn Network Close to Deal With ESPN

A deal with the University of Texas and ESPN over a new network seems very near.  There have been no announcements yet about the broadcasting of Longhorn sporting events to central Texas and beyond as of last Thursday.  ESPN's Burke Magnus doesn't seem to be worried that the two sides haven't come to an agreement yet:

"We'll have a lot more to share in the next eight days," said Burke Magnus, ESPN's senior vice president for college sports programming. "It's not a great concern right now. It's just simply the way it works."

Hopefully they get a deal done this week!  I want to start watching all Longhorn games on the Longhorn network!

Texas Longhorns Could be in Trouble with NCAA

The NCAA is going through turbulent times relating to scandals by their major universities like USC and Ohio State. Players throughout the country are seeming to have a difficult time with the rules.

Now, after USC dealt with the stripping of their '04 title and Ohio State goes through their own deal, it looks as though the Texas Longhorns may be joining the not-so-fun party.

The wife of Cleveland Browns quarterback Colt McCoy, who was a former Longhorn, may have spilled the beans about Texas football players. Whoops... Guaranteed Mrs. McCoy's comments will be looked in to by the NCAA and that the necessary actions will be taken.

Texas Longhorns News

As of January 28th, the Texas Longhorns Men's Basketball Team is #8 in the Coaches Poll.  They have a 17-3 record and 5-0 record in the Big 12.  Last week, they beat the #3 Kansas Jayhawks on the road to end the Jayhawks 69 home game winning streak.  They have shown they can play with anyone in the country and I'm excited for the rest of the season. 

On the football side, Texas Longhorn football continues to bring in recruits.  Multiple outlets have the Texas Longhorns with one of the strongest recruiting classes for the 2011 season.

The Texas Longhorns Women's Basketball team is 13-7 on the season and 2-4 thus far in the Big 12.
