Texas Longhorn Herbie Awards

Looking for Texas Longhorns that won Herbie Awards?  Look no further I've got them right here.  Herbie awards are awards given annually each preseason by ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit.  Here are the Texas Longhorn players who won awards.

Top true freshmen:
Impactful coordinator hires:
  • No. 1: Bryan Harsin, OC, Texas

The ultimate Herbie
  • No. 5: Emmanuel Acho, LB, Texas
Herbstreit also picked Texas to win "eight or nine games."

Freshman Close Up: Jaxon Shipley

Jaxon Shipley Longhorns
Jaxon Shipley is expected to shoulder a pretty big load as a freshman this season.  He will start at wide receiver and he will return punts as well for the Longhorns this season.  He is the younger brother of Cincinnati Bengal Jordan Shipley who starred at Texas as well.  Longhorn head coach Mack Brown as very high expectations for the younger Shipley:

"I think we'll get turned in to the NCAA because they're going to think Jordan is back when they see him out there for a 12th year.  Jaxon is mature. He's caught just about every ball. He runs great routes. He is tough. He knows what to do."

I can't wait to see what Shipley has in store for us as a freshman.  If he is anything like his brother, man oh man will he be good.

Longhorn Basketball Recuit Kevin Thomas Fails to Qualify Academically

Texas Longhorn basketball recruit Kevin Thomas will not be playing for the Texas Longhorn basketball team this upcoming season.  He was ruled academically ineligible.  This is a blow to the Texas Longhorn recruiting class of 2011.  However, Kevin Thomas was only a three star recruit and not anywhere near the gem of the recruiting class.  Hopefully the Longhorns are able to reallocate their scholarship that they were planning on giving to Thomas to a five star recruit in next year's recruiting class.

Malcolm Brown Twitter

Here's a link to Malcolm Brown's twitter as well. Malcolm Brown is an incoming freshman running back who is a five star recruit according to many recruiting services.  He should play a critical role in the Longhorn's offense next season.  The link to his page is right here

Quandre Diggs Twitter

There is a new cornerback in Austin and his name is Quandre Diggs.  Many expect him to be an impact player and I have to say his Twitter page is extremely entertaining.  I would definitely recommend following him as soon as possible.  A link to his Twitter is right here

Longhorn Network Close to Deal With ESPN

A deal with the University of Texas and ESPN over a new network seems very near.  There have been no announcements yet about the broadcasting of Longhorn sporting events to central Texas and beyond as of last Thursday.  ESPN's Burke Magnus doesn't seem to be worried that the two sides haven't come to an agreement yet:

"We'll have a lot more to share in the next eight days," said Burke Magnus, ESPN's senior vice president for college sports programming. "It's not a great concern right now. It's just simply the way it works."

Hopefully they get a deal done this week!  I want to start watching all Longhorn games on the Longhorn network!

Garrett Gilbert's Job is in Jeopardy

Garrett Gilbert had another very shaky performance Saturday during a scrimmage.  There are reports that there is a chance Gilbert could lose his job. Gilbert was very bad last season during his first season as the starting quarterback of the team.

Gilbert is famously known for replacing an injured Colt McCoy in the BCS National Championship game in 2010 against the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Texas Might Lose Rivalry with Texas A&M

It is very likely that Texas A&M will be leaving the Big 12 for the SEC.  That means that A&M and Texas might not play each other anymore.  Since they won't have to play each other in  a conference game, the two schools would have to agree to play each other year in and year out.  A&M probably won't want to play a tough Texas team each year because they still have to go through the daunted SEC each season if they make the switch.

It would be really sad if this rivalry ended.  I love watching my Longhorns beat the Aggies year in and year out.

Texas A&M Almost Went to SEC

Texas A&M was extremely close to moving to the SEC over the weekend.  Members of the SEC finally voted against adding any more teams at the current time.

My question is:  what does this mean for Texas?

Wow, this really could mean a number of things.  If the Big 12 loses any more teams that means the conference will have less than 10 teams.  That would be way too low for a conference.  I think the Big 12 would definitely look to add teams like a TCU or maybe even a BYU to keep the league upright.  I can't see the Longhorns leaving any time soon because of their new tv deal that would conflict with a lot of conferences who have their own networks.  Hopefully the Big 12 stays in tact and the Longhorns can continue to stay in the conference and kick Oklahoma's butt.

Texas Longhorn Rice Owl Week 1 Preview

Texas Longhorn opponent: Rice Owls

Owl's Head Coach: David Bailiff

Returning Starters for the Owls: 20

This is a really nice tune up game for the Longhorns.  How dominant the Longhorns look in this game should be telling to how the season will go for the Longhorns.  Last season, they won 34-17 after being tied with the Owls at half time .  It would be really nice to see the Longhorns win by 50 or so this year and get the season off to a very good start.

Texas Longhorns 2012 Recruiting Class, Number One

ESPN recently updated the class rankings of the 2012 recruiting classes in college football.  The school who has the number one class in the nation so far?  That's right, it's our Longhorns!

The Longhorns have nine commitments from the ESPN top 150.  Five star running back Johnathan Gray is joined by top 35 recruits receivers Cayleb Jones and Thomas Johnson.

Last year's 5-7 season has not slowed down the Longhorns on the recruiting trail one bit.

Texas Longhorn Network Sparks Talks of Fairness

The Longhorns finished in last place in the Big 12 South last season, but despite that, the Longhorns have been a major topic of discussion at Big 12 media days. The Longhorn Network has been the main focus.

Set to launch on August 26, the $300 million collaboration between Texas and ESPN has raised concerns about the fairness of the deal, especially the advantage Texas may have over other universities in the recruiting process.

Only time will tell what has, up to now, only been speculated about. The effects of the Longhorn network will be seen soon enough.
